SUBWAY SERIES DISAPPEARS ...
Ted Williams has a
four hit day in Cleveland
June 16, 1948 ... Ted
Williams slugged a home run, two doubles and a single in four times
at bat, as the Red Sox beat the Indians before 20,025 fans at
Municipal Stadium. The Sox beat the Indians for the second day
in a row, this time by a 7-4 score.
All this was accomplished by beating Bob Feller. He was knocked
out of the game for the fifth straight time. The Indians
forsook their "Boudreau Shift" and played Ted like any left-handed
batter, but it didn't matter. Ted homered over the left field
fence and the two doubles were also line drives to left. The
base hit single was a smash that Joe Gordon was only able to knock
down.
Bobby Doer connected for his second homer of the year off Feller, his
seventh of the season. Joe Dobson started for the Sox and picked up
his eighth win, but needed some help from Dave Ferriss in the ninth.
Dobson was one out away from a complete game when he blew up, walking
home a run and giving up a homer.
Both Doerr's and Williams' homers came in the seventh inning off
Feller, and both had a runner on base. Ken Keltner knocked out
his 15th homer of the year for Cleveland in the fifth inning. |
