The Sox and Johnny Pesky win one for Mel Parnell
June 15, 1948 ... The
Red Sox finally manufactured some offense for Mel Parnell and opened
their 16 game road trip with a fine 7 to 3 victory over the first
place Indians at the big stadium in Cleveland.
Parnell outpitched Bob Lemon, and threw one of his best games of the
year, giving him only his second win in six starts. The
undefeated, Lemon was not puzzling to the Sox hitters. He was
hit hard and not effective in the clutch, walking eight batters.
Lemon was sent to the showers in the seventh inning after Johnny
Pesky delivered a bases loaded single to break a 2-2 tie.
Billy Goodman started the rally by drawing a walk, and went to second
on a line single to right by Birdie Tebbetts. Parnell
sacrificed the runners along and Dom DiMaggio was walked, to load the
bases for Pesky. Before the inning ended, Lemon gave up two
more runs, putting the Sox up 5-3. Two more scored in the ninth
on Allie Clark's two base error on Ted Williams' hit, Vern Stephens'
double and Bobby Doerr's single to center.
Parnell was tired but faced down the last seven hitters in the last
two innings to preserve the 7-3 win. The Sox were only the
second team to knock out Lemon this year. |
