Pat Seerey's HR downs the Red Sox

Gettel, traded to Chicago by Cleveland a week ago, pitched the pale
hose to a 5-3 win at Fenway Park. Only a second inning homer by Bobby
Doerr and brief rallies in the eighth and ninth were Gettel's only
reason to worry.
The White Sox sent Sox starter, Mickey Harris, to the showers in the
fourth, after he had been touched for four hits. Harris was wild and
easily hit when he managed to get the ball over the plate. He
was relieved by Ellis Kinder, who pitched fairly well, but taken out
for a pinch hitter in the eighth.
After giving up only two hits after Doerr's homer to score Vern
Stephens in the second inning, Gettel had some control troubles only
in the eight. In the third inning, with Luke Appling aboard, Pat
Seerey unloaded one into the left field net, to make the game 4 to 2.
He had two outs in the ninth, before Ted Williams singled through the
shift and was followed by Stan Spence, who also singled. But
the best Stephens could do, was to tap one back to Gettel, ending the
game. |
