FOOTBALL AT FENWAY
October 14, 1949 ... Boston University's Terriers, sparked by sophomore sensation, Harry Agganis, swamped West Virginia at Fenway Park. The sharp-shooting Lynn Classical grad was immense for B.U. scoring one touchdown and passing for three more. George Luker shared the accolades by tearing off touchdowns runs of 8 and 45 yards. The 52 points equaled an all-time scoring mark for Boston University. When the terrific Terriers ran up a 38-7 lead halfway through the third period, Coach Donnelli finally called off the hounds and put in the second stringers. On of these lesser played members, sophomore Tom Oates snagged three touchdown passes. Agganis setting up his plays like a pro, scored on a quarterback sneak for the first score, climaxing an 70-yard scoring drive. A little later, George Sulima snared a short pass unmolested in the left pocket of the end zone. George Winkler, the right flanker slipped behind two defensive back to grab another toss from Agganis in the end zone. Then George Luker took a handoff from Agganis and went 45 yards like the wind for yet another score just before the half. Luker still was full of steam when the second half commenced. He took the opening kickoff 88 yards for a 31-7 lead before West Virginia knew what happened. Luker was so explosive that he was clear and drawing away from any pursuit at midfield. Agganis handled the offense with a delicate touch and completed eight of his 13 throws for 114 yards. |
