THE GREATEST EAGLE FOOTBALL TEAM November 20, 1940 ... Center Fred Naumetz has been working out at the end position with the absence of Gene Goodreault. He would be the substitute for Ed Zabilski. Naumetz played end for the freshmen last season and worked out there at today's practice against the third stringers. Joe Zabilski is out with a sprained elbow and will not see action until the Holy Cross game. November 21, 1940 ... Charlie O'Rourke showed up with a sore hip and Mike Holovak is still limping around so Frank Leahy called off today's scrimmage and the squad ran through dummy drills instead with the freshmen running Auburn's plays. |

Boston College shocks Auburn November 23, 1940 ... At Fenway Park, the day was damp and cloudy but the Eagles displayed their best football of the season in handing Auburn their worst defeat in twenty years. In addition to Charlie O'Rourke the Eagles displayed many of their stars. Auburn put up a great fight for the first 30 minutes and held the Eagles to only a 7-0 score at halftime. At the start of the game the Eagles nearly scored on a 60 yard pass from O'Rourke to Frank Maznicki, only to score near the end of the period on a 40 yard bomb. Other than that play, B.C. couldn't get close other than two unsuccessful field goal tried by Maznicki and Alex Lukachik. The Eagles exploded in the second half. Henry Toczylowski starting stunning reverses, spinners and cutbacks inside the Auburn tackles as the Eagles started a 70 yard drive. O'Rourke culminated the eight play drive with a 15 yard run to make the score 13-0 in the third period. Then the rout was on. In the final period, Frank Maznicki, Mike Holovak and Teddy Williams brought the count to 33-0. On the first play of the final period, Maznicki blasted right through three tacklers into the end zone. Shortly after that score, Mickey Connolly snatched a Tiger pass at the Auburn 30 and ran it down to their 20-yard line. Four plays later, Mike Holovak mowed across from the five. Third stringer Teddy Williams was thrown into the contest in the middle of the fourth quarter and made his presence known when B.C. faced a fourth down and six. On his first chance he streaked around right end on a reverse and ran in for his first college score. Auburn, rated as one of the best teams in the South, averted a shutout on the last play of the afternoon after a pass interference penalty had given them a first down on the one against the Eagles third and forth stringers. Until that play, the Tigers had made just two first downs, advancing beyond midfield just once in the first half. Except for the last three minutes, they never saw midfield at all in the second half. The convincing victory, the Eagles ninth in a row, virtually clinched a national ranking for Boston College. With 313 points in nine games, B.C. leads the nation in scoring and has far exceeded the team record for touchdowns. |
