“DIARY OF A WINNER”

COACH FRANK LEAHY

THE GREATEST EAGLE FOOTBALL TEAM

August 30, 1940 ...
42 members engaged in a two-session opening of football drills at the Heights under the supervision of head coach Frank Leahy, whose first season last year, culminated with a visit to the Cotton Bowl.  the coach thought his team members reported in good shape and plans to start scrimmages late next week.  The two-a-day workouts will continue for at least 10 days, excluding Sunday, but including Labor Day.  The initial outing was far from the usual casual type of first day sessions.  The squad made an active review of offensive assignments by running through a series of non-contact ground and pass plays.  The hand-picked squad consists of 23 lettermen, as well as Henry Woronicz, who left two years ago, and sophomore Mike Holovak.  Coach Lerahy sifted out his top players at last year's spring practices and he has the cream of his crop to now work with.

September 11, 1940 ... The deadly passing of Charlie O'Rourke and the ground thumping of Mike Holovak combined for two of the four touchdowns at today's scrimmage.  The other two scores were by Teddy Williams, the Notre Dame transfer and Capt. Henry Toczylowski.  Chet Gladchuck was at his usual center position after being absent with a hip injury for four days.

September 13, 1940 ... The scrimmages today were light, comprising kicking and passing.  After the scrimmages, Coach Leahy lined up two varsity elevens for a short but rugged tackling drill.  Lou Montgomery was the most successful ball carrier on the field.

September 15, 1940 ... The varsity drubbed the freshmen, who were playing the first Eagle opponent, Centre College of Kentucky.  The varsity won 33-7 playing four full 15 minute periods.  Charlie O'Rourke hit Hank Tocyzlowski for a touchdown in the first period. O'Rourke then hit Frank Maznicki for a 20 yard gain down at the freshmen 10-yard line, who then carried it in for another score.  Woronicz snared an O'Rourke pass for another touchdown in the third period.  In the fourth period Adolph Pasiuk recovered a freshmen fumble to set up the fourth score, with Maznicki running it in and making it 27-7.  O'Rourke then ran one himself off tackle to make it 33-7.  The freshmen scored in the second period on a pass from Madden to Benedetto.
