“DIARY OF A WINNER”

THE
PATRIOTS' FIRST TITLE December 14, 1963 ... The Kansas City Chiefs playing probably their most important game of the season, simply scalped the Patriots, 35-3. Now the best the Patriots can hope for is a playoff. They can do this if the Houston Oilers lose one of their remaining two games. That would put the Patriots in a playoff with the Buffalo Bills on December 28th. Len Dawson passed for three touchdowns and ran 43 yards for another. Halfback Abner Haynes went wild in the second half and closed out the game with a 36 yard sprint for his longest run of the season. The frozen field and 11 degree temperature spelled a formula for mistakes. The Pats capitalized on the first mistake as Chiefs’ punter Jerrell Wilson bobbled the snap from center and was tackled at the Chiefs’ 30 yard line. The Pats drove down on the back of Larry Garron, to the two and settled for a field goal.
The Chiefs countered and drove 57 yards in the second period for a touchdown. In this drive, the Patriots were on the hook for a 15 yard pass interference penalty by Dick Felt, followed by a Dawson to Chris Burford pass in the end zone. In the third period the Chiefs closed the frozen door with two quick touchdowns. It started with a roughing the kicker penalty on the Patriots, giving the ball back to the Chiefs at mid-field. Abner Haynes sparked the scoring drive rushing 22 yards and grabbing a 26 yard pass from Dawson. Dawson then connected with tight end Fred Arbanas in the right flat for the touchdown. Only five plays after the roughing the kicker call led to the touchdown. A Patriots fumble during the ensuing drive gave the Chiefs the ball back on their 47 yard line.
In the fourth quarter, Dawson hit a string of five completions to give the Chief their fourth touchdown.
The Chiefs defense was outstanding. The 3-4 invited the Patriots to run, but
with Larry Garron being the only effective runner, it was impossible. Now, all the Patriots can do is wait and hope Houston loses one game. |
