“DIARY OF A WINNER”
|
THE PATRIOTS' FIRST TITLE November 17, 1963 ... The Pats offense went on their best spree of the year, setting three club records. In spite of it, the best they could do was a 24-24 tie with the Kansas City Chiefs. Babe Parilli and Tony Romeo were at their best in a strange game. There was a conversion kick blocked, a safety, a great goal line stand, and a great performance for Kansas City, from rookie quarterback, Eddie Wilson. Wilson passed for two touchdowns and expertly guided the Chief’s offense to the final, tying touchdown. That last drive covered 71 yards in nine plays, with a 26 yard touchdown pass with Curtis McClinton to frustrate the Patriots, who themselves had come from behind twice. Larry Garron, on a second down situation, burst up the middle, with Walt Cudzik lead the way and steamed 47 yards into the end zone, to give Boston a seven point lead. Prior to that, the Patriots had a great opportunity but missed. In eight plays Boston went 79 yards down to the Kansas City one. Four times, Parilli sent Harry Crump into the center of the line and four times, Buck Buchanan and Bobby Bell stopped him. On the next series, Houston Antwine pulled the ball out of Eddie Wilson’s hands a jumped on it for a safety. So what should have been six points was settled for only two.
The game started badly, with Larry Garron fumbling the opening kickoff on the Boston 25. The Pats were asleep and had 10 men on the field for Kansas City’s first play. The Chiefs then took the ball and in three plays with Wilson connected with Frank Jackson for the first touchdown. Boston got three back on a Cappelletti field goal. Cappy’s muscle pull did not stop him from kicking, just running. Boston followed with a great drive covering 80 yards in nine plays climaxed with an eight yard toss to Tony Romeo in the left corner of the end zone. Kansas City’s Duane Wood blocked the PAT. The Patriots scored again before the half, as Parilli snuck in from the one after passing his team downfield for 58 yards in 10 plays. The Pats led 15-10 at the half. Wilson brought his team back in three plays with Curtis McClinton slamming in from the five to start the third quarter. Then came the safety, Garron’s run, and finally the Chief’s last ditch drive to tie the game. Parilli connected on 25 of 47 attempts for 354 yards, a team record. Tony Romeo had 10 receptions to set another record. Garron’s 584 yards for the season sets a new team mark. On the down side, Larry Garron fumbled a punt, in addition to the opening kickoff. Babe Parilli fumbled on the Kansas City 14 yard line, and Cappy missed a game winning 40 yard field goal in the fourth period. It was truly a great terrible game that deserved to end in a tie. |
