THE PATRIOTS' FIRST TITLE
The Chargers charge past the Patriots
September 14, 1963 ...
The Patriots defensive unit sparkled in the first quarter. The San Diego
Chargers didn’t make a first down and never crossed midfield. With nine
minutes gone the Patriots got on the board when Gino Cappelletti booted a
35 yard field goal. The drive started on the Pats 43. Babe
Parilli passed to Larry Garron for 8 yards and Tony Romeo for 13 more.
Parilli then ran the ball himself for 13 more to set up the field goal.
Early
in the second period the Chargers roared back to grab a 7-3 lead on two
big plays. The first was a 43 yard punt return by Keith Lincoln. Lincoln
took Tom Yewcic’s punt on his own 14 and squirmed away from two tacklers
to the Boston 44. On the other play, quarterback Tobin Rote threw a 43
yard bomb to Lance Alworth in the end zone.
The
Chargers continued minutes later. They blocked a Gino Cappelletti 42 yard
attempt and two plays later scored again. The score happened when halfback
Paul Lowe faked an end sweep and tossed the ball to Jerry Robinson who
gathered the ball in at midfield and raced unmolested for a 71 yard
scoring play, making it 14 to 3.
On the next series,
Babe Parilli, after completing a pass to Larry Garron went to the sidelines with a pinched nerve in his shoulder, a condition aggravated when he was slammed down by Earl Faison. Tom Yewcic came in
and drove the Pats 75 yards for a touchdown.
Two pass interference penalties and passes to Larry Garron and Jim Crawford moved the ball to the San Diego 20. Crawford swept to the 12 and caught a pass from Yewcic to the one. Yewcic then slid over center for the score. The
half ended with the Pats down 14-10.
In the closing
moments of the half a pass interception by Tom Addison set a field goal by Cappelletti, which was wide right. Except for a couple of fourth quarter field goals, there was no more scoring in the game.
Cappelleti kicked one from 36 yards and San Diego equalized that with
George Blair kicking one from 31 yards out, completing the scoring at
17 to 13.
Larry Garron had another good game with 69 yards rushing, 45 yards receiving and 72
yards on kick returns.
