FOOTBALL AT FENWAY
December 5, 1948 ... In what proved to be their last game in Boston, the Boston Yanks pulled the surprise of the season by defeating the Philadelphia Eagles 37-14, before 9652 at Fenway Park. "I guess we'll move" said owner Ted Collins after the last place Yanks had laid waste of the Eastern Division league leaders. "I don't know for sure yet, and I may be back again next season. It's strictly an economic situation." Collins placed his monetary losses for the 1948 season in the vicinity of $200,000 which brings his total loss over the past five years, to over $700,000 In yesterday's upset, the Eagles scored in the fourth minute of the opening period. The Eagles took the opening kickoff and marched down to the Yanks 16 yard line. End, Jack Ferente took a pass from Tommy Thompson in the end zone, for the first score. The Yanks tied it up four minutes later. Phil Slosburg fielded a punt at the Yanks 15 and broke it down to the Eagle 47 yard line. Slosburg broke around left to the 35 and then Frank Muehlheuser broke through right guard to tie the game. In the second period, the Yanks scored twice within two minutes. Starting at the Yanks 32, Slosburg was able to hit Frank Seno at the 49 and Seno broke into the clear for the next score. Two plays after the kickoff, Bill Chipley intercepted Bill Mackrides' pass at the Eagles 36 and raced untouched into the end zone. Aided by a series of penalties, the Eagles scored their second touchdown from the Yanks 20 yard line with Tommy Thompson's pass into the end zone being caught by Joe Muha after it was deflected by Yanks defensive back Bob Hazelhurst. The Yanks came right back by Golding intercepting Thompson at the Eagles 11 and running it through the entire Eagle team to the end zone. In the waning seconds of the game, the Yanks scored again. The Yanks defense stopped the Eagles on 4th down on their 14 yard line. Slosburg passed to Johnny Poto, getting the ball down to the three, with Rudy Romboli banging it across in two attempts. |
