When Ensign Cottrell joined the Braves in 1914, they had won nine in a row
when he made his first appearance for the Braves, on August 7th, starting a home
game against Pittsburgh. The left-hander gave up two runs on three walks and a
hit in just 1 2/3 innings, and George Stallings wasted little time in replacing
him. His wildness cost him dearly, as the Braves relied on a three-man rotation
for much of August, and although he was with the team for the rest of the
season, Cottrell didn’t see action as a Brave again
