“DIARY OF A WINNER”
|
BOSTON BRAVES
... August 25, 1948 ... The Braves opened up more daylight on the rest of the National League behind Warren Spahn's seven hit, 2 to 0 shutout over the Cardinals at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis. Spahn has come back to his form of last year with a vengeance and but for only a harmless looking ground ball, that leaped over the head of Cardinals' shortstop Marty Marion, the game would have ended in a tie. The fortunate break came in the fifth inning when the Braves got their two runs off Howie Pollet, who practically matched Spahn's performance pitch for pitch. Clint Conaster had started the inning with a drive that bounced off Erv Dusak's glove at third-base and rolled into foul territory, giving him a double. Then Phil Masi stepped up to the plate and looked at a strike. Swinging the hardest he could at the next pitch, the ball took a couple of hops toward Marion at shortstop and shot over his left shoulder, skipping into centerfield and allowing Conaster to cross the plate. Spahn tried to sacrifice Masi to second, but Pollet got to the ball and threw Phil out. Tommy Holmes then singled to center and moved Spahn to second. Al Dark came up and sliced a one hopper off Red Schoendinst's glove into right field and Spahn scored the second Braves run. The Cardinals threw some scares into Spahn, when in the third inning, they loaded the bases with two out. Terry Moore on a three and one count, smashed a long fly to left that looked like a home run, but ended up being caught by Mike McCormick against the wall. Nelson Potter and Johnny Sain were examined by the team doctor this morning. Potter for his sore back and Sain after he had suffered a bruised hand, stopping a line drive from Enos Slaughter. Potter will simply have to rest and probably will be back in a couple of weeks. Sain and was all right and he was given the okay to make his regular turn on the mound. Billy Southworth revealed that Jim Russell would be released from the hospital in a week, but it is doubtful that he will return to the team soon. |
