The Braves blow the lead and lose
July 24, 1948 ... Veterans
Enos Slaughter and Terry Moore combined with a walk and a double in
the 10th inning, to give the Cardinals a 4 to 3 victory over the
Braves at Sportsman Park in St. Louis. It was the fourth loss in the
last five games by the Braves and reduced their margin at the top of
the National League to five games, with the Cardinals and the Dodgers
tied for second place. With the Braves leading 3 to 2 in the
eighth-inning, Slaughter rapped his ninth home run of the year onto the pavilion
roof in right field to tie the game. He then drew a walk on four pitches in the
10th inning with one away and Moore lined a double down the left-field line and
Slaughter slid home with the winning tally, to give the Cardinals the walkoff.
Bob Elliott put the Braves in the lead when he opened the second inning by
knocking out his 12th home run of the year. The Braves picked up another pair
off starter Ken Johnson before the inning was over. Those two runs were unearned
as a walk to Clint Conaster, an error by Don Lang, and a long single by Braves
starter, Bill Voiselle, drove in the two runs. Connie Ryan, who was on first
because of an error, scored all the way from there, as did Conaster from second.
The Cardinals got those runs back in the third, but actually should not have
even had a run. Ralph LaPointe singled for a starter and after him, Marty Marion
flied out, and Musial drew a walk. Slaughter hit a ground ball that had
double-play written all over it to Al Dark, but instead of making the play
himself, when he was only two feet from second base, Dark tossed the ball over
the Ryan, which was good enough to erase Musial, but Stan took out Connie on the
slide, and as result the ball got knocked away, enabling LaPointe to score and
Slaughter to reach second. Then Slaughter scored on Ron Northey's single right,
making it 3 to 2.
It remained there until Slaughter homered in the eighth to tie up the game.
The Braves loaded the bases with two outs against George Munger in the eighth,
but couldn't score as Musial made a fine catch of Phil Masi's line drive to deep
center.
The Braves road record is now five in five, with one tie in 11 games. The
Cardinals have won their last five games played against the Braves and have a
7-5 edge on the season. It was Voiselle's third loss in a row in trying to land
his 11th win. |
