“DIARY OF A WINNER”

THE 1914 "MIRACLE" BRAVES September 12, 1914 ... A whirlwind finish was turned against the Braves today and they were beaten by Brooklyn 4 to 3. If not for an error with two out in the eighth-inning, the Robins probably would have not scored it all. As it worked out, they got three runs and tied the score after the opportunity to make the third out as been passed up. They then squeezed in, what proved to be the winning run, in the ninth-inning. Lefty Tyler was on the mound for the Braves after a long rest and was outpitched by Raleigh Atchison, another southpaw. As a matter of fact, Athcison was so good that the Braves should not have scored more than one run. The three runs the Braves made were in a cluster during the fifth inning, as result of a single, a pass and another single on which an error was made. Having such a lead and it to them, it looked as if they would have held it, but they didn't and so, instead of having a three-game lead over the Giants, there margin was reduced to two games, as the Giants split a doubleheader with the Phillies. Only six hits were made off Atchison, and one of those was a slow roller by Hank Gowdy, on which Cutshaw try to make it quick play and barely missed it. In that fifth inning, with one out, after Gowdy reached base on the slow roller to Cutshaw, Tyler was passed to follow, and Herbie Moran singled to right. Casey Stengel however, let the ball get away from him into the right field corner, and Moran chased both Gowdy and Tyler over the plate for the three runs. Tyler went along well right until the eighth inning, only six hits being negotiated off him. Then with two out, Lew McCarthy singled and went to second on a wild pitch. Jake Dalton then hit a ground ball down to Maranville, which the Rabbit led get away from him long enough to give Dalton time to get safely on first. Jake Daubert doubled to score McCarthy and put Dalton on third. Following that, Hi Myers came off the bench as a pinch-hitter to bat for Stengel, and after fouling off several balls, finally got one past Red Smith into left field to score both Dalton and Daubert and tie up the game. Myers became the third out, when he tried to stretch his hit into a double and was thrown out by Ted Cather. Now, with the score tied at 3 to 3, a man on third and only one down, Tyler was taken out and Bill James was sent in to pitch the ninth inning. The rescue detail however was sent in a little too late. James came very near to choking off the winning run at the plate, an awkward fall being all that stopped him from doing it. George Cutshaw was on third with a triple and Gus Getz bunted the ball down the third base line, as Cutshaw took off for home. James got to the ball but fumbled it just as he got it and fell down, so that he could not make the throw, allowing Cutshaw to easily come across the plate with the go-ahead run, 4 to 3. Possum Whitted played a great game at second, filling in for Johnny Evers, and Maranville made a spectacular catch over near the left-field foul pole after Hank Gowdy and hauled in a difficult foul pop after a long run. The Braves also pulled off another classy doubleplay, which the crowd admired. Although was quite pleasant it was a rather cool day for baseball game. But that did not affect the attendance to any extent, as there were upward of 14,000 fans in the stands and the big crowd pulled hard for the Braves to win out the last two innings, but Atchison would not allow that to happen. |
