RED SMITH |
THE 1914 "MIRACLE" BRAVES
August 9, 1914
... No game scheduled ... Braves President
James Gaffney announced that he had bought third baseman Red Smith from
the Brooklyn Robins. The amount paid was not given out, but Smith is a
great player and those who saw him in the games here on the Fourth of
July, regard him as a star.
His
purchase by the Braves is with a view of strengthening the team in every
way possible. It looks as if he will be a valuable addition to the club.
Smith has been with Brooklyn since 1912 and in the 151 games last season
he was at bat 540 times, scored 70 runs, made 169 hits, 40 of which were
doubles, 10 triples and six home runs. His batting average for the season
was .296. He is 33 years old, stands 5 feet 10 1/2 inches and weighs 171
pounds.
He bats
and throws right-handed. His home is in Atlanta and he first played
professional baseball with the Anderson, South Carolina team in 1911,
after which he went to Nashville, then to Atlanta and then Brooklyn. |
