THE 1914 "MIRACLE" BRAVES
The Braves beat the Cubs in 11 innings
July 8, 1914 ... Johnny
Evers was thrown out of the game today and Oscar Dugey, who took his
place, made a high throw in the seventh inning, which enabled the
Cubs to tie the game and the Braves were forced to go 11 innings
before they beat the West Siders by a score of 7 to 4. Johnny's
banishment came in that seventh inning. He singled and went to second
when Joe Connolly was hit by the pitch. Rabbit Maranville then hit a
ball to Heinie Zimmerman and Evers was forced at second. Zimmerman
completed the double play and the umpire called Maranville out. Evers
thought the Rabbit and beat the throw at first and complained so hard
about the call that he was tossed out of the game.
Dugey took his place in the seventh inning and it was in the eighth that he
presented the Cubs with the run that tied the game. With two outs Roger
Bresnahan waited on four balls and walked. Bubbles Hargrave batted for Zip Zabel
the pitcher, and then singled. Fritz Mollwitz came into pinch hitter and hit the
ball to Dugey. Dugey threw the ball over Butch Schmidt's head at first, allowing
Bresnahan to score the tying run.
Larry Cheney started the game for the Cubs and was
knocked out of the box in the second inning on three singles, a triple, an error
and a wild pitch which spelled four runs of the Braves. The Braves did not score
again until the 11th inning, when three singles mixed in with a couple of base
on balls giving them three runs and the game. Zabel held Boston in check from
the third inning until the seventh. In the eighth he was taken out for a
pinch-hitter and Jimmy Lavender finished the game for Chicago.
Lefty Tyler worked for the Braves and was good for
11 base hits. The Cubs bunched two hits in the third inning, fourth inning and
in the sixth. Bill Sweeney's single, a base on balls to Red Corriden, a hit
batsman and an out let another run score. Dugey's bad throw in the eighth sent
another runner across.
The Cubs filled the bases with two outs in their
half of the second and Tyler struck out Jimmy Johnson, who was sent in to
pinch-hit for the starter Cheney in the fourth inning, the Cubs filled the bases
with none out, but only one runner crossed the plate. Evers and Maranville
killed off to in a double play and Tyler struck out Wilbur Good. It was Good
fanned again for the third out, after the Cubs loaded up the bases in the sixth
inning.
In the 11th inning, with the score tied at four
each, Jim Murray pinch-hit for Wilson Collins to start. He was given a base on
balls and Bert Whaling followed with a sacrifice to move him to second. Tyler's
out sent Murray to third and Ted Cather singled him in. Cather then made it to
third base on Dugey's hit and Joe Connolly was walked. Then Maranville sent both
Cather and Dugey across with two more runs to make the score 7 to 4. Tyler got
the Cubs out in the 11th for the victory. |
