Rube Benton is too much for the Braves hitters
May 14, 1914 ... Unable to hit the pitches served up by Rube Benton and Dave Davenport, the Braves suffered their second shutout of the series, this game ending with the score of 6 to 0
in favor of the Cincinnati Reds at Redland Field. Benton allowed but four hits before the end Buck Herzog tossed out of the game by the umpire, Mal Eason. His successor, Dave Davenport did not allow the Braves any safe hits. The Reds, on the other hand, hit Lefty Tyler easily, but errors were responsible for the majority of the
runs that were scored.
In the sixth inning a small size riot took place when Benton took the bunt from Wilson Collins, ran up and apparently tagged him, but umpire Eason, who was right on top of the play and ruled Collins safe. Benton got into an argument with the umpire and Buck Herzog came over to support his
pitcher. After a period of time umpire Eason and had enough and ordered both men off the field and threw them out the game.
The Reds scored their first run in the very first inning on a pass to Herbie Moran, a sacrifice and Heinie Groh's single. Two more runs were added in the fourth, when Groh was safe on Rabbit Maranville's high throw, a walk to Armando Marsans, and a bunt by Dick Hoblitzell to load the bases.
Fritz van Koinitz sent a fly to short right that Johnny Evers put away, but his poor throw home allowed both Groh and Marsans to score. In the fifth the Reds picked up another run, and two more in the seventh to give them their six runs. |
