... Benny Tate slammed a walk-off home run into
the right field bleachers, to the delight of 10,000 fans at Fenway
Park to win the second game of a doubleheader played against the
Cleveland Indians. The Red Sox had been beaten down by Wil Hudlin in
the first game, 10 to 1, and in the second game, a pitching duel
between Ivy Andrews and Clint Brown had been battled.
The score was tied at 1-1 at the end of nine innings. In the tenth
inning, Andrews was knocked out of the box on two singles and a
double, that put the Indians up by two.
But in their half of the 10th, the Sox came back and knocked out
Brown. Tate led off with a single to center and Roy Johnson lined a
single to right. Off went Brown to the showers in favor of Sarge
Connally. Johnny Watwood was called upon to pinch hit for Marv Olson
and forced Johnson at second, but Tate was able to score on the play.
Marty McManus was next and lined a single to left, sending Watwood
scampering over to third base. That brought George Stumpf up to the
plate and he also singled to left, scoring Watwood and the game was
tied back up at 3-3.
Ed Durham was the next Sox pitcher in the 11th and, in spite of
giving up a walk and a base hit, retired the other batters. In the
Sox half, Rabbit Warstler started by popping up, bringing up Tate,
who hammered one of Connally's pitches over the fence in right,
ending the game, 4 to 3.
