The Sox
get a win in extra innings
June 7, 2016
...
Down by a run after six innings, the Red Sox tied the game then beat
the Giants, 5-3, in 10 innings before a boisterous crowd of 41,512
that made it feel like this was more than just a random interleague
game in June.
The Sox
scored two runs in the 10th against San Francisco closer Santiago Casilla (1-1),
who was pitching his second inning. In his first major league at-bat of the
season, backup catcher Sandy Leon led off with a double to right field. Pinch
hitter Marco Hernandez intended to bunt, but walked on four pitches. Then Mookie
Betts did bunt and it was perfect, right down the third base line for a single
that loaded the bases. Dustin Pedroia swung at the first pitch he saw and
grounded to third. The Giants got Leon at the plate. It could have been a double
play, but catcher Trevor Brown did not risk a throw to first. Xander Bogaerts
was next and he dropped a soft single into center field. Hernandez scored and
Betts, who read the ball perfectly, was right behind him.
Craig
Kimbrel got the final three outs for his 13th save. Junichi Tazawa (1-1) was the
winner. Four Red Sox relievers combined on four scoreless innings.
San
Francisco righthander Albert Suarez, who was making his second major league
start, retired the first five Red Sox batters before Bradley and Young had
back-to-back doubles in the second inning.
The Sox
went up, 2-0, in the third inning. Betts doubled to left field with one out and
took third on a groundout. Bogaerts followed with a groundball into the
shortstop hole. Brandon Crawford made a strong throw, but a run scored when
Bogaerts dove into first base.
Suarez
allowed only one other hit, a single by Christian Vazquez in the fifth inning.
He came out of the game with a 3-2 lead in the seventh inning after walking
Bradley with one out. With George Kontos in to face Young, Bradley stole second
and went to third on a throwing error by catcher Trevor Brown. Young then drew a
walk.
The next pitcher out of the bullpen was lefthander Javier
Lopez. The Red Sox countered with David Ortiz as a pinch hitter. Ortiz swung at
the first pitch and grounded to Crawford, who was playing on the right side of
the infield in a shift. Crawford tried to tag Young and throw to first for a
double play, but Young flopped to avoid the tag. Bradley scored.
Suarez was
charged with three runs, two earned, on five hits.
Red Sox
starter Rick Porcello retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced, four by
strikeout. The exception was a home run by Jarrett Parker in the third inning.
The fourth inning was a rough one for Porcello. The Giants loaded the bases on
singles by Joe Panik, Matt Duffy, and Brandon Belt. Porcello then walked
Crawford on five pitches -- four of them fastballs -- to force in the tying run.
Duffy scored when Gregor Blanco grounded into a double play. Porcello completed
six innings, allowing three runs on five hits. He had only the one walk and
struck out six.
Robbie
Ross Jr. pitched a perfect seventh inning for the Sox. Koji Uehara followed with
a scoreless inning. Sox relievers retired 12 of the 14 batters they faced.
