“DIARY OF A WINNER”

THE CURSE OF THE BAMBINO, PART 10
"IT AIN'T OVER 'TIL IT'S OVER"...

October 20, 1986 ... No game scheduled ... The Mets cancelled their workout at Fenway Park, preferring to regroup than entertain the horde of curious media that now demand to know why the Mets, once considered baseball's best team, are down two games.

Don Baylor makes his World Series debut as a designated hitter. Danny Heep will be the Mets' DH, and manager Davey Johnson will start his regular lineup, with Mookie Wilson playing left field.

The Red Sox went about business as usual today. Some players expressed amazement about how so many people underrated them.

For the record, the Sox bullpen has posted a 1.83 ERA during the postseason, allowing only four earned runs during 19 2/3 innings across nine games. Steve Crawford has come up with two victories and a 0.00 ERA. Bob Stanley picked up the save Sunday night. Joe Sambito is 0.00 in three appearances, and Calvin Schiraldi has two saves and a 1.29 ERA, and hasn't allowed a run (and only two hits) in three appearances since he took the loss in Game 4 of the American League playoffs.
