“DIARY OF A WINNER”

JIM RICE

THE CURSE OF THE BAMBINO, PART 9
"IT AIN'T OVER 'TIL IT'S OVER"...

May 29, 1986 ... No game scheduled ... Roger Clemens checked in with John McNamara and reported the slightly sprained knuckle on his right middle finger was improved.

The Sox are 20-6 in the month of May, their best since a 23-7 month in 1978. The three-game sweep of the Indians pushed the American League East leaders above the .500 mark within the division (5-4) for the first time this year. Boston is 26-10 against the AL West.

Jim Rice had five runs batted in Wednesday, which might help ease the frustration of a home run drought. Rice has gone 44 games without a homer, the longest such stretch of his career. But in the last 31 games, he is hitting at a .346 clip (47 for 136) and has raised his average to .307.

Don Baylor's three-run homer Wednesday gave him six game-winning hits, tops on the club.
