THE SOX BATS RUMBLE,
BUT THE PITCHING STUMBLES ...
Nine-Run Seventh Inning
beats the Indians
July 21, 1977
...
The Sox remained 1/2 game behind the Baltimore Orioles by
splitting a doubleheader with the Cleveland Indians, winning the
first game, 11-4, and losing the night game, 8-2.
Butch Hobson hit a three-run homer for his second hit of the inning,
in a nine-run seventh inning, as part of his 3-for-4, four RBI
effort. Rick Miller had a perfect game with four hits. Luis Tiant
fanned eight, passing the 2000K mark in his career.
Larvell Blanks' two-run homer gave the Indians a 3-2 lead in the top
of the seventh, but George Scott's base hit touched off the explosion
in the Sox half of the seventh. Hobson doubled to send him to third
and Denny Doyle's sac fly scored him.
Rick Miller's base hit scored Hobson with the second run of the
inning. After Miller stole second base off Wayne Garland, he was
brought home by Fred Lynn's double.
Rick Waits came in to replace Garland and walked Jim Rice
intentionally, but then walked Yaz to load the bases. Another walk to
Carlton Fisk forced in one run and Scott's second base hit of the
inning, scored two more. Tom Buskey came in to the game and Hobson
slugged his home run for nine runs and an 11 to 3 lead.
In the nitecap, Andre Thornton, who had three hits in both games,
whacked a two-run homer while John Lowenstein, Bruce Bochte added
solo homers to give the Indians a split. Cleveland rolled to a 6-5
win off Bob Stanley. Rice belted his 24th homer off winner Jim Bibby. |
