THE SOX BATS RUMBLE,
BUT THE PITCHING STUMBLES ...
Yaz and Carbo blast two
homers each,
while Jackson and Martin brawl
June 18,
1977 ...
Carl Yastrzemski and Bernie Carbo each drilled home runs and
George Scott hit his 17th homer, to power the Sox to a 10 to 4 win
over the Yankees, as manager Billy Martin and Reggie Jackson engaged
in a near-brawl in the Yankee dugout.
Yaz drove in five runs with his 11th and 12th homers of the season,
to go along with a pair of singles. Carbo hit both home runs into the
screen, while Scott led off the seventh with a shot into the
centerfield bleachers.
The Sox spotted the Yankees a 2-0 lead in the first inning , then
went ahead to stay in the bottom half of the first. Yankee starter,
Mike Torrez gave up back-to-back singles to Rick Burleson and Fred
Lynn who scored ahead of Yaz's first home run.
Martin and Jackson exchanged word with the Sox at bat in the sixth
inning and had to be restrained by teammates in full view of
thousands of fans and a national television audience. With one out,
Lynn lined a single to right and Jim Rice got a check-swing double
down the right field line.
Billy Martin then went to the mound to bring in Sparky Lyle to
replace Torrez. And at the same time, Martin sent out Paul Blair to
replace Reggie Jackson in right field, believing that he had no
hustled after Rice's ball, allowing him to turn a single into a
double. Jackson jogged into the Yankee dugout, being jeered by the
Fenway fans, went up to Martin to confront him for embarrassing him
and immediately the shouting began. Then something was said and
Martin went after Jackson and had to be held back by Elston Howard
and Yogi Berra.
Lyle got the Yankees out of the inning, but in the seventh gave up
the homer to George Scott and Yaz's second homer into the Yankee
bullpen in the eighth inning. The Sox unloaded 16 hits, 13 coming
against Torrez. Rick Burleson had three hits and Carbo, Scott and
Lynn two each.
Reggie Cleveland got the win after being helped by Bill Campbell who
blanked the Yankees for three innings, earning his 14th save. The
Yankees had pulled to within 7-4, when Campbell was brought in.
