fumble the game away
September 1,
1975 ...
Rick Dempsey, Rick Bladt and Fred Stanley, the tail end of
the New York Yankees batting order, keyed a 14-hit attack that
carried the Yankees over the Red Sox, 4 to 2. Doc Medich blanked the
Sox on three hits for six innings, and survived a Sox rally in the
seventh inning. He finally relinquished the game to Tippy Martinez,
with two outs in the eighth inning.
Stanley collected three hits while Dempsey, Bladt, Walt Williams and
Roy White had two apiece against Rogelio Moret.
The Yankees scored two runs in the second inning. The rally was
triggered when Dick McAuliffe misjudged Williams' infield pop-up that
he overran and let it fall safely. Dempsey and Bladt followed with
singles for the first run and Stanley beat out a topper down the
third base line for an RBI single.
A single by Thurman Munson and a double by Rick Dempsey upped the
Yanks lead to 3-0, in the third inning. The Yanks added an insurance
run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Sandy Alomar, after Bladt
and Stanley started the inning with base hits.
The Red Sox finally scored in the seventh inning on doubles by Fred
Lynn and Jim Rice, and singles by Rick Burleson and McAuliffe. Lynn's
double was his 38th, the most since Yaz in 1966.
Dick Pole was activated and pitched for the first time since being
struck in the face by a line drive on June 30th. He pitched three
shutout innings. |
