THE CURSE OF THE BAMBINO, PART 6 ...
"THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM"
Adair's clutch
hit brings the Sox back
to earn a doubleheader split
September
4, 1967 ... After losing the first game in
Washington, 5 to 2, the Red Sox won the nightcap, 6 to 4. The split
enabled the Sox to remain a half game behind the league-leading
Minnesota Twins, who split a doubleheader with the Indians. Carl
Yastrzemski came out of a long slump and slammed his 36 home run with a man on,
in the first game, off Camilo Pascual in the sixth inning. He also singled and
was robbed of an extra base hit by Frank Howard.
But Yaz's hitting was all the punch that the Red Sox could muster against
Pascual and southpaw Darold Knowles, who was used over the last two innings.
Dave Morehead and Dan Osinski were hit quite hard by the Senators.
Frank Howard had two infield singles and a home run for the Senators in the
first game. And he played left-field brilliantly, taking a triple away from Yaz
and a base hit away from Morehead, in the fifth inning.
After losing the first game, Dick Williams made six changes to his lineup as
the Sox opposed rookie Dick Nold. The losing streak that the Red Sox were in,
faded with some help from the Senators defense. In the sixth inning they scored
four times to grab a 6 to 4 lead. The win went to Gerry Stephenson, who is 3 and
0 since being brought back from Toronto. Stephenson was pitching well, but
trailed after five innings.
In the second game, Frank Howard managed to get a double off Stephenson in
the first inning that put the Senators ahead 1 to 0. Ken McMullen had singled
before him, to score the run.
The Red Sox came back in the second inning with two runs off Nold. Norm
Siebern was playing first base and he started things off with a triple to
left-center, with one out. Rico Petrocelli came up next and hit a ground ball to
shortstop Eddie Brinkman, who tried to cut off Siebern at home unsuccessfully.
Mike Andrews worked a nice hit-and-run single, to put Rico on third and Mike
Ryan then walked to load the bases. Nold walked José Tartabull to bring in
Petrocelli, and with the bases still loaded, Dalton Jones grounded out to first
to end the inning, but the Sox were up 2 to 1.
The Senators scored two runs in their half of the second when Doug Camilli it
a home run into the centerfield bleachers and Ed Brinkman followed him with a
triple right. After a base on balls to the pitcher, and an infield out, Ken
McMullen beat out a grounder to Rico Petrocelli, that scored the third
Washington run, putting them up 3 to 2.
McMullen homered in the fifth inning to make it 4 to 2, but the Red Sox broke
out in the sixth with some poor defense by the Senators. Petrocelli singled to
start the inning and Andrews drew a walk. Mike Ryan dumped a bunt between the
plate and third and pitcher Dick Lines had a good chance to cut down Rico at
third, but his throw was in the dirt and bounced off McMullen's glove.
Petrocelli scored, Andrews went to third and Ryan made it down to second.
Now one run behind, Dick Williams sent out Jerry Adair to pinch-hit for
Stephenson. Jerry lined a hard single to left that produced two runs and put the
Red Sox in the lead. Ken Harrelson lifted a fly ball to right-field that moved
Adair over to second and Jones scored him, with a single up the middle, that
gave the Red Sox their sixth run.
Sparky Lyle came on and put down the Senators for two innings. In the eighth
he had a minor threat when Cap Peterson doubled and Hank Allen beat out an
infield hit, but he got Camilli to fly out. John Wyatt came in in the ninth and
picked up the save with a perfect inning. |
