The
Sox come-from-behind on homers by
Tony Conigliaro and Dick Williams, to beat
the Yankees in the first game,
but lose the second one
June 10,
1964 ... The Red Sox attempted two blazing finishes
against the Yankees. One worked while the other fell short.
They were one run behind in the last of the 10th inning in the first
game. Tony Conigliaro homered to tie the score and Dick Williams, who
had homered his last two times to the plate in Kansas City, blasted
another homer into the left field net, giving the Sox a 7 to 6 win.
The homers gave the Sox their fourth consecutive victory over the
Yankees this season. But in the night game, the Sox couldn't hold on
and lost 10 to 6. They had leads of 4-2 in the third inning, then 6-5
going into the sixth inning. And in the ninth inning, down by four
runs, the Sox loaded the bases, but their effort fell short.
The 10th inning homers by Tony C. and Williams gave Bob Heffner, who
had succeeded Jack Lamabe and Dick Radatz, the afternoon victory.
Eight home runs were belted in the two games.
Lamabe opposed Stan Williams to start the afternoon. He pitched well
but yielded single runs in the first, second and fifth innings.
The Sox got three runs in the second inning to come back and lead 3
to 2. Lee Thomas reached on a base hit and Frank Malzone homered into
the nets. A double by Eddie Bressoud off the wall, followed by a
single from Bob Tillman, accounted for the third Sox run.
Yaz lined a triple to left-center in the third inning and was brought
home when Thomas grounded out. In the sixth inning, Dick Stuart
doubled to the center field wall and Malzone moved him to third with
a single to center. Bill Stafford came in to replace Williams for the
Yankees and Bressoud greeted him with a single to right, that scored
Stuart, putting the Sox ahead, 5-3.
But in the eighth inning, Bobby Richardson doubled and moved to third
on an infield out, scoring on a base hit by Roger Maris. Dick Radatz
replaced Lamabe and retired the side. Then in the ninth inning, Phil
Linz homered off Radatz to tie the score at five apiece and send the
game into overtime.
At this point, the game was halted for 46 minutes while everyone
watched a thunderstorm pass through. When play resumed, Bob Heffner
came in to pitch for Radatz. Maris got a base hit off him and then
stole second. He scored on a two-out single by Linz, putting the
Yanks up by one.
Bud Daley took over to pitch against the Sox in the bottom of the
10th and was taken deep by Tony C. to tie the game. Dick Williams
followed with the walk-off game winner.
