Yaz's
grandslam lifts the Sox past Detroit
May 3,
1964 ... The score was tied at 7-7 in the last of
the fifth inning. The lead had gone back and forth five times. But
now the bases were loaded and Carl Yastrzemski was at the plate. Yaz
had never homered with the bases full in his career.
Julio Navarro was pitching for the Tigers and he blew his first pitch
past Yaz. But on the second pitch, Yaz slammed a long fly ball against
the wind, that landed in the Tigers' bullpen, putting the Sox back in
front, 11 to 7. His six RBIs in the game, was the largest single game accumulation
for Yaz.
Yaz's homer was the culmination of a six-run outburst for the Sox, who
entered the inning down by a 7-5 score. And Dick Radatz kept it that
way, by stopping the Tigers on just one hit, over the last four
innings.
Gates Brown had smashed a ball, with two men on, into the right
field bleachers off Jack Lamabe in the fourth inning. Tony Conigliaro
also homered off Phil Regan in the third inning. In the first five
innings, both teams knocked out 25 hits.
Each team scored in the first inning. Jerry Lumpe lobbed a single
into centerfield with one out, for Detroit. Al Kaline drew a walk and
Norm Cash hit a smash to center, that Tony C. couldn't track down and
let it get by him, for a triple.
In the Sox first inning, Chuck Schilling, who had three hits in the
game, singled to left. Eddie Bressoud's ground ball took a bad hop
over Jerry Lumpe's glove and he was on. Schilling went over to third
and scored on Yaz's grounder to Lumpe. Frank Malzone doubled to left
and scored Bressoud from second, tying the game up at 2-2.
Bob Tillman, who also had three hits, started the second inning by
doubling. Schilling hit another double down the third base line, that
scored Tillman, and Yaz stroked a line drive to left that was dropped
by Willie Horton, trying to make a shoe-string catch.
In the third inning, with the Sox ahead 4-2, Tony C. lined his homer
into the right field bleachers. Lamabe got two outs in the fourth
inning, before Bill Freehan lined a single to center. Dick McAuliffe
followed with a single to right and Gates Brown took Lamabe deep into
the stands, tying the game at five apiece.
When Don Demeter opened the fifth with a double, Bob Heffner came in
to pitch for the Sox. A misjudged line drive got by Congiliaro,
allowing Al Kaline to leg out a triple. Cash followed with double,
that bounced by Dick Stuart and Detroit went out front, 7 to 5.
The Sox started the fifth inning outburst with a strikeout by Stuart
and a walk to Lou Clinton. Conigliaro singled to left and Tillman
reached on a bloop hit that landed just over Julio Navarro's head, to
load the bases. Dalton Jones, pinch-hitting for Heffner, bounced a
ball off Norm Cash's glove down the right field line for a double and
two runs. A strikeout by Schilling and a walk to Bressoud, loaded the
bases for Yaz ... 11 to 7. |
