"A YEAR WITH TWO NO-HITTERS" ...
The Sox score 12 runs in one inning

May 4, 1962 ... The Red Sox came home and whacked the Chicago White Sox, 13 to 6. They saved just about all of their ammunition for 12 runs in the fifth inning, five shy of their own American League record of 17 runs in an inning.

During that 12-run round, Russ Nixon tied a record by getting two hits as a pinch-hitter.

It started with a walk to Carroll Hardy. After Pumpsie Green flied to center, Nixon got his first hit while pinch-hitting for Mike Fornieles, who had given up three runs to Chicago in the fourth inning. Nixon hit a sqibber down the third base line and beat the throw. Pete Runnels drew a walk to load the bases. Eddie Bressoud's single scored Hardy with the first run and the bases were still loaded. Gary Peters came in to pitch and gave up a base hit to Yaz, who brought in Nixon and Runnels.

Now Dom Zanni was brought in and he walked Jim Pagliaroni. Frank Malzone's single scored Bressoud and still the bases were full. Gary Geiger brought in two more runs to take a 6-4 lead, with another single.

Eddie Fisher got his turn to pitch and walked Hardy, who was up for the second time, to load the bases once more. He then walked Pumpsie who forced in Malzone. Nixon collected his second hit of the inning, a semi-roller that struck the second base bag and bounced into centerfield. Frank Baumann pitched next for the White Sox, and got Runnels to fly to center for the second out, before giving up back-to-back doubles to Bressoud and Yastrzemski. He struck out Pagliaroni to end the fireworks, and the Red Sox led 12 to 4.

A triple off the center field wall by Al Smith in second inning, followed by a Nellie Fox base hit, gave Chicago their first run. Singles by Mike Hershberger and Fox preceded a homer by Cam Carreon in the fourth, giving the White Sox their 4-0 lead.

It was a perfect evening for Eddie Bressoud with three hits in five times up, but he committed his first error in a Red Sox uniform. He had accepted 109 previous chances flawlessly. His double in the 7th inning scored Runnels with the Sox' 13th run of the game.
