THE BAMBINO, PART 3
A
SUBWAY SERIES DISAPPEARS ...
Mickey Harris
comes through with a clutch outing
September 20, 1948 ... The
Sox are taking their pitching wherever it comes from and they called
on Mickey Harris today, who came up with a four hitter to beat the
Tigers 7 to 2 at Briggs Stadium. The Red Sox had to win this game, as
the Cleveland Indians stayed a half game off the base by beating the
Philadelphia Athletics 6 to 3, and the Yankees beating the St. Louis
Browns 8 to 7. Harris has been anything but consistent this year.
Today's win was only his seventh and was his sixth complete game. He walked nine
and was in trouble constantly, yet he was able to succeed. In spite of the base
on balls, he should have had a shutout. Errors by newcomer Lew Stringer and
Johnny Pesky robbed him in the first inning to give the Tigers a lead.
The Tigers however were not playing the kind ball they gave them the
doubleheader triumph over the Sox yesterday. Errors helped the Sox to two runs
in the third and three runs in the fourth. Vern Stephens' twenty-eighth home run
accounted for the seventh run in the ninth.
The Sox jumped out to an early lead on singles by Dom DiMaggio and Pesky, and
a sacrifice fly by Ted Williams in the first inning.
With one out the Tigers half, after an infield hit, Vic Wertz hit a likely
doubleplay ball down to Stringer, who threw wildly past second base with the
ball going into foul territory. Neil Berry who was on first, was able to come
all the way around and score the Tigers first run. When Pesky retrieved the
throw, he threw it by Birdie Tebbetts, allowing Wertz to get the third. Harris
got into the act and threw a wild pitch that brought him home to give the Tigers
a 2 to 1 lead.
The lead was short-lived as Boston went ahead in the third inning. DiMaggio
singled and Pesky walked before catcher, Bob Swift, let the ball get by him to
advance the runners. Then Stephens hit a ball down to Johnny Lipon that he
booted away, allowing DiMaggio to score and Pesky tp get to third. Stan Spence
came up and clipped a double to right that scored Pesky, putting the Sox back in
the lead 3 to 2.
Sox added three more runs the next inning and put the game away. Tebbetts
singled and DiMaggio hit a double down the third-base line. Pesky got both
runners in and then went to second base when Vic Wertz let the ball get by him.
He scored on Williams' double to left. The Sox added the final run in the
ninth-inning on Vern Stephens' home run.
In Cleveland, the Indians defeated the A's for their six straight and
thirteenth in their last fifteen. The Tribe infielders gave their pitchers
excellent support, turning in five doubleplays. Joe Gordon drove in three of the
Cleveland runs with a single, a double and a homer. In St. Louis, Joe DiMaggio
knocked out his 39th home run of the season, and knocked in what proved to be
the winning run, when he singled with the bases loaded in the eighth. His three
RBIs boosted his season total to 148. |
