August 23, 1948 ... The Red Sox had the day off as they prepared to meet the Cleveland Indians in a crucial three-game series. On July 24th the Red Sox trailed the Indians by a game and a half, swept a three-game series at Fenway Park and took over first place, only to slip the fourth place six days later. The Indians now lead the Red Sox by only one half game.

Dom DiMaggio (.269 BA) has been effective against the Indians, batting .303 at Fenway Park and .329 in Cleveland, driving in 16 runs. Ted Williams (.377 BA) has batted in 22 runs.
