Philly rebounds and
pushes the Sox back

... The Red Sox had one of those days when
they could do nothing right. The Philadelphia Athletics, however, did
everything right and waltzed away with a 10 to 3 verdict at Fenway
Park. And thus the A's vaulted over the Sox into second place with
the Red Sox also losing a full game to the New York Yankees. Dick
Fowler notched his seasons 12th win and his third over the Red Sox, however he
needed help from Lou Brissie, who pitched the last two innings, allowing no hits
and retiring the side on strikes in the eighth. Fowler was tremendous in the
clutch, leaving 10 Red Sox baserunners aboard in his seven innings.
Joe Dobson started for the Red Sox, in his fourth attempt to win his 14th
game and was locked in a two all tie with Fowler through six innings. Then
faulty defense and great Philadelphia hitting, sent him to the showers.
Following rapidly were Tex Hughson, Earl Johnson, Earl Caldwell and Chuck
Stobbs, with Philly picking up four runs in both the seventh and eighth innings.
The Red Sox started off by getting a run in the first inning on a Johnny
Pesky walk, a single by Ted Williams and a sacrifice fly by Vern Stephens. They
got another run in the fifth on Pesky's bunt, Williams' walk and Stephen's
single to left, that tied up the game at two each.
The ballgame was lost in the seventh inning when Buddy Rosar opened with a
single to right. Elmer Valo singled over second and Barney McCoskey lined one in
right to score Rosar. A sacrifice fly from Sam Chapman and Ferris Fain's double
into left had Tex Hughson came in to replace Dobson and he granted a right-field
singled to Hank Majeski, putting the A's up 6 to 2. The A's batted around in the
eighth, getting five walks and two hits and four more runs.
Bobby Doerr's errorless streak is now at 58 games, handling 139 putouts and
177 assists, for a total of 316 chances. In the last 89 games he is only made
one error. |
