Bobby Doerr goes 3 for 4 in the
sweep of the White Sox series

... The Red Sox won their ninth in a row after
humiliating the Chicago White Sox by score of 13 to 1, and a clean
sweep of their five-game series. The win put them only one and one
half games behind the league-leading Cleveland Indians. The anemic
White Sox were defeated for the 15th time in their last 19 games and succumbed
meekly to Mickey Harris, the lefty starter for the Red Sox. The game also marked
the return of Ted Williams to the lineup after a 15 game absence. Although he
still was not in the best of physical shape, he belted a three-run double to
left-center in the seventh and added a single along with his usual free pass.
Harris put down Chicago with only five hits, walking three and striking out
two in winning his third game of the year, going the distance for the second
straight time. He lost a shutout in the fourth inning when he walked Luke
Appling and Cass Michaels, while giving singles to Pat Seerey and Mike Tresh.
Harris threw 124 pitches and had good control. Luke Appling played in his 2000th
game at shortstop.
Lefty Bill Wight proved to be no puzzle for the Red Sox, who, paced by Bobby
Doerr, gave Harris a joyride for the afternoon. Every member of the Red Sox
except for Pesky and Harris, knocked in at least one run for the cause and Doerr
in particular had a field day. He had a home run, a double and a single in four
at-bats.
The Sox jumped out to a 3 to 0 lead on Doerr's double, Birdie Tebbetts'
single, a walk to Harris and a double by Dom DiMaggio that netted three runs.
Vern Stephens and Sam Mele singled around a walk to Doerr for a fourth run in
the third inning. Wight was sent to the showers in the fifth inning after
getting nobody out in favor of Marvin Rottblatt, who gave a walk to Johnny Pesky
and singles to Ted Williams, Stephens, Doerr and Mele, along with another pass
to Goodman that put the Red Sox up 9 to 1.
With two down in the seventh inning, the Red Sox picked up three more on
Ted's base clearing double after walks to Harris and Pesky and a single by
DiMaggio. Then Doerr sent a home run into left field screen in the eighth to
wind up the afternoon scoring. Doerr is particularly sad to see the White Sox
leave town, getting 10 hits in 17 times at bat over five games, with three
doubles, a triple and a home run for six RBI. |
