Parnell
scatters eight hits and
gives the Sox an easy win

... The potent southpaw pitching of Mel Parnell
restored the Red Sox to the win column at Fenway Park tonight.
Parnell scattered eight Washington hits, to give the Sox a 4 to 1
victory, erasing the bad taste they had left over from the night
before. The Senators were spotted a run in the first inning and with
Parnell pitching eight subsequent shutout rounds, the Sox roared back
to clip Early Wynn for a pair of runs and his successor Forrest
Thompson, for two more. Although Parnell's pitching was
outstanding, the big spark was provided by Ted Williams. His two base hits
provided the first and final Red Sox runs. It was a hot, well played scheduled
game on a perfect night.
After the Senators scored in the first inning, Dom DiMaggio opened the
assault on Wynn with a single to center in the bottom of the first. After Johnny
Pesky flied out, Williams doubled off the left-field wall to send Dom to third,
who scored on Stan Spence's long fly ball to centerfield, tying up the game.
Three straight singles gave the Red Sox their second and winning run in the
next inning. Bobby Doerr started it with a base hit and took third when Billy
Goodman drilled one by Mickey Vernon at first. Birdie Tebbetts lashed one back
at Wynn and struck him on the right ankle for a single, scoring Doerr.
This brought in Thompson and the chunky southpaw, without the benefit of
warming up, threw good baseball during the final seven innings. He got out of
the initial jam by getting Parnell on a pop fly and DiMaggio on a doubleplay.
The Sox final pair of runs were tainted. Vern Stephens walk to start the
fourth and Bobby Doerr blooped one into short right for a single that sent
Stephens to third. Goodman dribbled a small one down to Al Kozar at second,
whose throw home and attempted nail Stephens was wide and the Sox had their
third run.
Williams' speed produce the fourth and final run. He stretched a routine pop
fly to center into a double, was sacrificed to third by Spence, and scored as
Doerr flied out to McBride in right field.
Parnell's win was his fourth of the year and second over Washington.
Tebbetts' line drive that hit Wynn in the second inning badly bruised his right
ankle. He left with the team last night and will have the ankle x-rayed in
Washington tomorrow. |
