Lou Brissie
keeps the Sox bats from doing damage

Brissie pitched the Athletics to a 4 to 2 victory over the Red Sox
and except for a tiring finish, the left-hander, with the shattered
leg, laced his fastball past the power laden Red Sox to spoil Joe
Dobson's consecutive game winning streak at six straight. Brissie had
beaten the Red Sox by the same score on April 19th, having given six
hits against to less on that occasion, after Ted Williams had almost
ruined his career with a torrid line drive off his battered leg.
Williams could do nothing more than get a long single and was twice sent down on
called strikes in this game. To finish off his excellent pitching, Brissie
fanned Babe Martin with a man on base in the ninth. Although this was hardly a
masterful bit of pitching, Brissie had a scary situation in the eighth-inning.
The Athletics were leading by a 3 to 1 score, but Dom DiMaggio and Johnny Pesky
singled to open the inning. However Ted Williams flied out to short left and
Vern Stephens lined a drive to the foot of the wall, that scored DiMaggio and
Bobby Doerr hit another line drive out to the same spot to end the threat.
Bobby Doerr had set up the only other run with a double off the wall after
Stephens had opened the second inning with a walk. Sam Mele was given an
intentional walk and Birdie Tebbetts grounded one down to Ferris Fain at first
who forced Mele at second. Mele blocked Eddie Joost's attempted double play, but
when Doerr attempted to follow Stephens home, he was thrown out at the plate.
Dobson, after pitching one-hit ball for four innings, was reached for four
base hits for two runs in the fifth to put the Athletics up 2 to 1. They got
another run in the sixth and one more in the ninth. Earl Johnson relieved Dobson
in the eighth after he was pinch-hit for by Matt Batts. |
