Dave Ferriss shuts out Chicago
as the Sox bats stay hot
June 22, 1948 ... The
Red Sox refused to stay down in Chicago and rallied to grab an 11 to
6 win over the White Sox. Joe Dobson was knocked out of the box in
the third inning, as they were trailing 6 to 2. But they climbed off
the carpet and slugged their way for their sixth straight game on the
road trip. Dave Ferriss came through with another brilliant
exhibition of relief pitching to get the win. The White Sox grabbed
a quick 1 to 0 lead in the first inning and the Red Sox came back in the second
to tie it up on a single by Vern Stephens, a dropped fly ball by White Sox
centerfielder Dave Philley, and a ground ball out by Billy Goodman. They added
one more in the third to grab a 2 to 1 lead on a base hit by Dom DiMaggio, an
error by second baseman Don Kolloway that allowed Johnny Pesky to reach base,
and a single to center by Ted Williams.
The lead was short-lived as the White Sox picked up five runs in their half
of the third inning. An error by Bobby Doerr and four singles did the job. The
Sox chipped away with another run in the fourth and one in the fifth that made
it 6 to 4. But in the seventh the Red Sox bats pounded White Sox starter Orval
Grove for four runs. Vern Stephens started off with a triple to center and was
knocked in by Bobby Doerr. Billy Goodman got a base hit to center and Grove then
walked pinch hitter Matt Batts. Grove was then replaced by Howie Judson and
after he too passed Dave Ferriss, that brought in another run. Pesky hit a fly
ball to right that scored Batts. Williams next singled to left to score Ferriss.
DiMaggio tried to score on the play, but was caught in a rundown between third
and home. The Red Sox now had the lead 8 to 6.
Then in the eighth-inning the Sox hitting barrage continued. Stan Spence
singled to right and came home on a home run by Vern Stephens. After Bobby Doerr
walked and moved to second on a groundout by Goodman, Batts scored him with a
single thru second. That gave the Red Sox three more runs and 11 to 6 lead.
Ferriss held the White Sox scoreless for six innings, allowing just three
scattered hits, walking one and striking out four, to pick up his third win of
the season. |
