The Sox power surge helps Mel Parnell again

Newhowser carried a seven-game winning streak into today's game but
the Red Sox had little respect and lashed him for a dozen hits and a
total of 22 bases, knocking him out of the box and beating the Tigers
8 to 3. The Red Sox have won all five games on their road trip and
have taken 13 of their last 16. They jumped over Detroit into fourth
place by the victory and are above .500 for the first time this
season. The Red Sox display of offense made Mel Parnell, there
slipped little southpaw, field great. The club was falling down miserably behind
Parnell in his early-season starts, but has come through in his last two
outings. Parnell at the Tigers number all day. He allowed only four hits, walked
three and was ahead of the batters a good part of the time, throwing only 108
pitches.
Today the Red Sox got four runs in the fourth inning and gave Parnell good
lead. They secured it with three runs in the ninth. Vern Stephens and Dominic
DiMaggio knocked out home runs and there were two aboard when Stephens got his
in the ninth-inning. DiMaggio at his home run to open the seventh. Another
mighty blow for the Red Sox was struck by Bobby Doerr in the fourth inning. He
knocked a tremendous line drive to dead center 420 feet from home plate, longer
than either the home runs and was able to judge his way to third base for a
triple.
Ted Williams boosted his batting average to .411 by getting two hits and four
bats and it was even started the fourth inning rally. Stephens walked on four
pitches and then Doerr unloaded his smash to center after Hal Newhowser happened
in the hole with a two strike in no ball count. Sam Mele lined a single to
center that scored Doerr tallied himself when birdie Tebbetts doubled to
right-center to give the Red Sox a 4 to 1 lead at the time.
The Tigers came up with two runs in the eighth-inning but the Sox got them
back and added one for good measure in the ninth when Johnny pesky doubled,
Williams was purposely walked and Stephens followed by hitting his 11th Homer
over the 370 foot screen in left-center, making it 8 to 3.
Ted Williams committed his first fielding error of the year when he permitted
Johnny Lippon's base hit to row between his legs in the third inning. Johnny
pesky had a rough day at the hot corner as both hoot Evers and George Kell they
grounders at skip between himself and the bad that could of been knocked down. |
