Bearden shuts
out the Sox
as Doby stars at the plate
May 22, 1948 ... Gene
Bearden, the young Cleveland Indians southpaw, was too much for the
experienced Red Sox here today at Municipal Stadium, shutting out
Boston 7 to 0, with a neat six hit pitching performance. He showed
amazing control of a good knuckleball, walked only two men and none
after the third inning. He was never in trouble. For the 20th time in
28 ballgames, the Red Sox starter failed to go the route, as Jack
Kramer took an early shower for the fourth time in five starts. The
new Red Sox nemesis, speedy Larry Doby, along with manager Lou Boudreau, did
most of the damage. Eddie Robinson also helped in hitting his sixth home run of
the season.
Bearden's domination in this game was so complete, that he made only 98
pitches. The Indians however got rough with Kramer in the fourth inning. Doby
pushed a neat bunt onto the grass in front of Billy Hitchcock, and although the
Sox third baseman slipped in attempting the field the ball, he had little chance
to nip the speedy Indian runner at first. He advanced to second on a wild pitch,
the ball landing in front of the plate, with Lou Boudreau at bat. Hitchcock
threw out the batter, but up came Ed Robinson and big trouble.
Kramer, pitching carefully, fell behind the Indians slugger. The count was
three and one, when Robbie slapped his sixth home run over the 365 foot marker
on the right-field fence.
Doby again started trouble in the sixth inning, when with none out, he fouled
off five pitches and then checked his swing, sending a topped roller to short
and beating Vern Stephens throw. He went to second when the throw got past first
baseman Jake Jones. Boudreau knocked Kramer's first pitch to right for a clean
single that scored Doby, making the score 3 to 0.
In the seventh inning Birdie Tebbetts batted for Kramer and Harry Dorish took
over on the mound. It was all the same to Doby. Jim Hegan opened the frame with
a Texas League single to short right field and reached second when Billy
Hitchcock threw out the pitcher Bearden. After Bobby Doerr threw out Tucker,
Doby singled to center to score him with the Tribe's fourth run.
Dorish joined Kramer in the showers during the eighth-inning, granting three
singles and a double by Dale Mitchell. Young Chuck Stobbs took over, with one
down, to get out of the inning, but the score was 7 to 0.
Larry Doby has now hit Red Sox pitchers for 10 hits in 24 at-bats, scoring 10
runs, batting in eight and knocking out three home runs. |
