Joe Dobson shuts out Washington
May 15, 1948 ... The
Red Sox won their third straight game today, beating the Washington
Senators, 5 to 0 at Fenway Park. It was thanks to Joe Dobson's strong
right arm and timely hitting against three Washington pitchers, that
the Sox took possession of fourth place. Dobson, winning his second
game of the year, gave up only three hits, walked three and permitted only one
base runner to reach third base. However, Ted Williams' 11 game hitting streak
was snapped, although Washington starter, Walt Masterson, passed the Kid twice.
Yet Williams gave another demonstration of his hustle when he got all the way
home from first on Bobby Doerr's double off the left-field wall in the third
inning.
Dobson had complete command in this game, facing only 33 batters. He faltered
in the ninth-inning when he walked the first hitter Al Kozar and balked him to
second. He recovered however to erase Gil Coan, Mickey Vernon and Ed Stewart.
The Red Sox went to work on Masterson very quickly. Johnny Pesky singled one
past Vernon to right with one out in the first inning. Williams, down two
strikes, waited out Masterson and drew a walk. Then Vern Stephens sent a nasty
grounder down to the smooth fielding Eddie Yost, who forced Williams at second,
and as Kozar was tardy in the relay, Stephens beat his throw to first,
preventing the double-play. Wally Moses slapped his first offering to short
left, scoring Pesky and giving the Red Sox a 1 to 0 lead.
The Red Sox picked up a couple of runs in the third when Pesky started things
off of with a ground single through second and Williams drew another walk. Vern
Stephens attempted to sacrifice the runners along and popped a short pop halfway
down the baseline, which the incoming Eddie Yost trapped on the short pickup.
Wally Moses then slashed a rising line drive to right-center and just as the
ball appeared to be falling in, Carden Gillenwater made a diving catch to take
extra bases away from Moses. Bobby Doerr came up next and doubled off the
left-field wall. The inexperienced Gil Coan let the ball get by him and Williams
hustled and sped home behind Pesky for the Red Sox third run.
Birdie Tebbetts led off in the fourth and belted the ball into the right
field stands at the foul pole for his second homer the year. That made it 4 to 0
for the Red Sox and that was it for Masterson. Ray Scarborough came into pitch
and gave up only one hit in three innings. However in the eighth a walk to Moses
and successive ground balls by Doerr and Jake Jones preceded Tebbetts' third hit
of the afternoon and sent in the fifth and final Red Sox runner across the
plate. |
