Bill Conroy brings home
the game winner in the 9th inning
June
13, 1942 ... Bill
Conroy's ninth inning single scored Bobby Doerr with the deciding run
in a back-and-forth contest that ended with the Red Sox beating the
Detoir Tigers, 6 to 5, at Fenway Park.
After being behind by a score of 4-1, the Sox tied the game in the
seventh inning. Both teams scored single runs in the eighth inning
before Conroy delivered his deciding hit in the ninth.
The Red Sox were first to score. In the bottom of the first inning,
Johnny Pesky singled with one out. After he swiped second, he scored
on Ted Williams' single to right.
Detroit scored three runs in the third inning on two hits and three
errors by the Sox, sending Charlie Wagner to an early exit. The
Tigers added another run in the fifth inning on two hits and a
sacrifice fly, gaining a 4-1 advantage.
But the Red Sox whittled away to tie the game up. In the fifth
inning, Pesky brought in a second Sox run. After Joe Dobson, who came
in to pitch for Wagner, banged out a base hit and was safe at second
base when second baseman Jimmy Bloodworth dropped Billy Hitchcock's
throw on Dom DiMaggio's potential doubleplay grounder, Johnny brought
him in with a base hit.
Two innings later, Pesky beat out a bunt to get on first. Lou Finney
sacrificed him to second and Ted brought him in with another single.
Ted scored the second run of the inning when Bobby Doerr lined a
double to left center and tied the game at 4-4.
A double by Bloodworth and a base hit by Hitchcock put the Tigers
ahead again in the eighth inning. The Sox countered in the bottom
half of the inning with Dom DiMaggio's double and Johnny Pesky's
fifth hit of the day brining Dom home.
With scored knotted at five apiece, Mace Brown held the Tigers in the
ninth inning and earned the win in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Roy Henshaw walked Doerr to start the winning tally. He was moved up
to second on Tony Lupien's bunt. Henshaw intentionally put Jim Tabor
on first to face Conroy. Conroy made them regret the move by lining a
game winning base hit to left. |
