Ted's ninth inning homer and Bobby Doerr's
walk-off hit bring the Sox a dramatic win

May 2, 1942 ... Ted Williams belted a game-tying home run in the ninth inning and Bobby Doerr followed that with a double that scored the winning run for a come-from-behind 11-10 Red Sox victory over the St. Louis Browns.

The Red Sox jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off Elden Auker. Johnny Pesky and Ted Williams both singled. Jim Tabor followed with a ground ball to third baseman Harlond Clift, whose throw went wild by first baseman George McQuinn, allowing both Pesky and Williams to score. Pete Fox next blasted a triple to center that scored Tabor with the third Sox run.

The Browns immediatly came back with three runs of their own of Sox starter Oscar Judd in the second inning. They then scored five big runs in the third when Judd walked two men, had the bases loaded and walked Wally Judnich, to allow the go-ahead run to trot home. Chet Laabs followed with a grandslam over the wall in left-center and the Sox found themselves behind 8 to 3.

Ted Williams doubled home Dom DiMaggio and Pesky to start the fifth inning. Jimmie Foxx followed with a blooper that got by everyone for a double, while Ted scooted over to third base, and Jim Tabor's single scored them both. Pete Fox moved Tabor up with a sac bunt and Doerr brought him in with the tying run on a base hit.

The game went into the ninth inning tied 8 to 8. Mace Brown loaded the bases and Vern Stephens bounced a doubleplay grounder to Pesky, but Doerr's relay to first got past Jimmie Foxx and two runners scored.

So, now down by two runs, Pesky led off the ninth with a grounder to third baseman Alan Strange. With his speed, Johnny beat the throw to first. Ted was next and lofted an Auker pitch deep into the right field grandstand that tied the game at 10 apiece.

Jimmie Foxx followed with another grounder to Strange, but he again couldn't get the out a first. Paul Campbell came in to run for Double-X and he moved up a base on Tabor's sacrifice bunt. Auker next walked Pete Fox to set up the force. That brought up Bobby Doerr. Bobby lined a ball to left center, Campbell sprinted home, and the Sox walked-off with the winning run, 11 to 10.
