DANNY MacFAYDEN

The Red Sox come from behind and stun
the Yankees with a walk-off win

May 16, 1930 ... In the first game of the series with the Yankees, the Sox came up with a 5 to 4 walk-off victory.

The Sox started the scoring with two runs in the third inning off Lefty Gomez. Charlie Berry drew a walk and scored from first on Danny MacFayden's double to right center. Tom Oliver's single to left, brought Danny home with the second run.

The Yankees tied thing up in the fourth off MacFayden. Babe Ruth was passed and Tony Lazzeri doubled. Lou Gehrig brought them both in with a double.

In the fifth inning things looked like trouble for Danny. Gomez led off with a hit and Earle Combs got another. Then he walked  Lyn Lary to load the bases. The excitement erupted, when Danny got out of it by striking out Ruth and Lazzeri and getting Gehrig to pop up.

Things were working out until the eight inning for Danny. But with two outs, Gehrig lined a double off the wall and was brought home by a base hit from Bubbles Hargrave, putting the Yanks up by one.

But in the bottom of the eight the Sox battled back and took a 4 to 3 lead off Gomez. Otis Miller lined to center and Earl Combs muffed the catch. Bill Narleski ran for Miller and came home on Berry's triple to right-center. Hank Johnson then replaced Gomez and Earl Webb batted for MacFayden. Webb lofted a fly ball to Ruth and Berry trotted home with the go-ahead run.

Ed Durham took the ball for the Sox in the top of the ninth and Bill Dickey, pinch hitting for Hank Johnson with one out, took a Durham fast ball out of the park into the right field bleachers to tie the game.

After a brief shower halted the game, the Sox came to bat in the bottom of the ninth with the game tied, 4-4. Roy Sherid came in to pitch for New York and walked Cedric Durst, who had been traded from the Yankees for Red Ruffing. Russ Scarritt bounced a ball back to the pitcher, who got Durst out at second. Bill Regan popped up for the second out, bringing up Bill Sweeney. Sweeney lined a fast one out to left center that got by Combs, allowing Scarritt to scamper home with the game winner.
