Dutch Leonard arrived home from St. Louis ahead of the team and, according to reports, is about to join the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, to fulfill his service to the country. Last winter, it was rumored that Dutch would join the Naval Reserves. Dutch had a meeting with owner Frazee
and Ed Barrow today at Fenway Park.
The Fore River and Squantum shipyards turned in an admirable performance during World War I, building 18 destroyers, 10 submarines, and 6 merchant ships in 1918 alone. In all, the two yards built 71 destroyers during the war - more than the total output of all other US shipyards combined. One
of the war-built destroyers was USS Reid was built in a record-setting time of 45 1/2 days. |
