SERIES CHAMPS
August 11, 1916 ...
No game scheduled ... The club returns after a remarkably successful tour of the west, playing to hostile crowds in cities supporting teams battling for a place in this year's pennant race. The heat was terrific, but the team won 12 of its 19 games, with five defeats coming in the
first game of a series after sleepless nights in almost airless berths, but the Sox delivered crushing blows to conclude every series.
The club had fine pitching and outhit their opponents. In the 19 games Boston scored 86 runs to 72 for their opponents, made 172 hits in 636 times at bat for an average of .270, while the western teams batted only .217. Five of the starters batted over
.300 including Larry Gardner (.403), Del Gainor (.316), Dick Hoblitzell (.308), Tilly Walker (.307), Babe Ruth (.375). Hick Cady's great batting was the feature of the Chicago series, while Jack Barry and Everett Scott delivered timely hits. |
