TOMMY DALY |
Red Sox lose in 17 innings to the White Sox
May 21, 1915
...
Tommy Daly stepped into the box with the bases loaded in the 17th inning at Comiskey Park and delivered a walk-off single to left field for the White Sox sending Buck Weaver with the winning run. The drive was a climax to
the most bitterly fought battle of the season and it sent Buck Weaver
home with the run that defeated the Red Sox, 3 to 2.
It started with Weaver's double down the right field line off Mays.
Finners Quinlin reached first when he was hit by a pitch. Ray Schalk laid down a perfect bunt. Hick Cady
fielded the ball and rifled a shot down to Hal Janvrin at third base, but Weaver slid
in under the throw. Daly came up to pinch hit for Red Faber and
spanked a single over third to score Weaver with the game winner.
Two superb
performances by Ernie Shore and Carl Mays had humbled Chicago for 14
consecutive innings. The White Sox shot out to the lead in the
second inning but the Red Sox tied it up.
Down 2 to 0 in the
sixth inning, Dick Hoblitzell drew a pass of Reb Russell with two
outs. He scored Boston's first run on Everett Scott's double to deep
center. Then in the seventh the Speed Boys sent Russell packing.
Harry Hooper singled past Bunny Brief, went to second on Heinie Wagner's single and scored on Hal Janvrin's shot past Braggo Roth
at third base.
Red Faber came in
to pitch and survived a couple of shaky innings when Boston put
together two hits and the eighth and again in the ninth. Carl Mays
took the Red Sox brilliantly through four innings, surrendering only
two scattered hits, until the final rally.
Tris Speaker was
thrown out of the game for arguing a decision at first base in the
sixth inning. Hobby was taken out of the game after being spiked by
Ray Schalk on a play at first. |
