FENWAY'S FIRST TEAM
June 30, 1912
... No game scheduled ... The past week was one of the
best put in by the Boston Red Sox this season, with doubleheaders being
played on three days and eight games in all. The Sox finished, with a week
of good pitching as a whole and hard-hitting by nearly all of the team.
The only member of the Sox who showed any considerable falling off with
his bat was Duffy Lewis, who hit well two weeks ago, but was hardly
expected to keep up the pace that he showed. Manager Jake Stahl, Bill
Carrigan and Hick Cady pushed their way into the .300 club for the first
time, with Heinie Wagner hitting .299 and Tris Speaker and Larry Gardner
also hitting extremely well. Hugh Bedient, the Red Sox young pitcher,
has been asking to get a few days off, but he wouldn't tell why he wanted
vacation at this time of the season. But it was learned why he wanted one of
those days. Saturday morning he was married to Miss Imogene Palmer of Buffalo
New York. She arrived in Boston and was driven to St. Mark's Methodist Episcopal
Church in Brookline, where she was joined by Hugh and they were met by Reverend
G.W. Barney , pastor of the church, who made the man and wife. It was a very
simple ceremony, with just a few friends present.
Eddie Cicotte returned home to Detroit to take care of his wife who is
seriously ill. Although the Red Sox and New York have a postponed game to make
up, manager Jake Stahl has cut out doubleheaders, and will put in the extra game
when New York comes to town next time. The Red Sox will play eight games this
week, and six games on the list are with Philadelphia. |
