ON THIS DATE (July 30, 1927) ... The Red Sox snatched a 5-to-4
victory from the St. Louis Browns in the first game of a doubleheader
today. Milton Gaston, the St. Louis starter, looked invincible with a
4-0 lead up until the sixth inning.
Until the fifth inning the Sox batters couldn't get a hit off Gaston
while the Browns piled up four runs. Then in the sixth, Gaston walked
Tony Welzer and Jack Rothrock doubled to left center.
Buddy Myer's grounder to second scored Welzer and moved Rothrock to
third. Browns catcher, Steve O'Neill gave the Sox a run when he
dropped a pop up from Flaggy, making it 4-2.
The Sox next rallied with two more runs in the bottom of the ninth
inning to take the game into extras. Wally Shaner tripled off the
left field wall with Buddy Myer on third and Flagstead on second and
two outs, to tie things up.
They finally won the game in spectacular fashion in the bottom of the
tenth inning. Fred Hofmann slashed a line drive double to right
center to lead off the inning. Billy Rogell came in to run for him
and Jack Tobin came up to bat for pitcher, Slim Harriss. Tobin laid
down a perfect bunt down the third base line and beat it out, while
Rogell moved over to second. Jack Rothrock slapped a single up the
middle and Rogell scored the walk-off winning run.
In the second game Elam Vangilder had the Sox by the neck, winning
9-to-2. |
