Moose Solter's walk-off homer starts the Sox
on a sweep of Washington in the Patriot's Day Doubleheader

ON THIS DATE (April 19, 1934) ... The Red Sox swept a doubleheader from the Washington Nationals at Tom Yawkey's diamond-studded new ball yard. The Sox batters pounded the living daylights out of the visitors, banging out 23 hits for 41 bases. The Sox beat the Nats 5 to 4 in the morning and 7 to 3 in the afternoon.

It was a ninth inning walk-off homer by Moose Solters that put the first game on ice. The second game was a slugfest against three Washington pitchers.

Solters came to bat with the game tied at 4-4 and proceeded to plaster the ball down the left field line, over the wall and into the window of the Lansdowne street auto shop for the game winner.

Washington got on the board first when the game started, but the Sox tied things up in their half of the first. Bill Cissell's double was followed by an RBI single by Ed Morgan. The Sox got an unearned run in the fourth with two men on, when Joe Cronin dropped a pop fly.

In the fifth the Nationals worked over a run to tie the game once again. Billy Werber doubled to open the Sox half of the 6th inning. He stole third base and Roy Johnson drew a free pass. Carl Reynolds' double to left-center brought them both home and the Sox were up by two.

Dave Harris doubled for the Nats, scoring two runners, tying the game again in the seventh inning. Then came the ninth inning and Moose Solters led the inning off.

There were also plenty of highlights in the afternoon game. A triple by Heinie Maush and a blow by Joe Cronin were the big smashes that gave Washington a 3-0 lead. Werber's triple followed by singles from Bucky Walters and Cissell, left the Sox one run behind in the third inning.

Carl Reynolds' triple and a double by Rick Ferrell tied the game in the fourth inning. Cissell's lengthy homer followed by  the a Werber double, a pass to Johnson, a clean-up three bagger by Reynolds, and a single by Moose, put the game on ice in the fifth inning. Johnny Welch closed the door on the Nationals for the following four innings and the Sox finished with a 7 to 3 victory.

5500 fans paid to see the morning game and after it ended, more fans began to flock into their seats for the afternoon clash.

Billy Werber collected three doubles, a single and a triple during the two games. Carl Reynolds doubled in the first game with a pair of singles and another pair of triples in the afternoon. Bill Cissell got a double early and a homer later, while Solters settled for a single after his game-busting wallop in the morning.
